About this project.

The Swings

Phase I of PlayGrand Adventures will incorporate several types of swing components to challenge, stimulate and develop the user's vestibular system by providing various swinging events. The vestibular system is the sensory system that responds to the position of the head in relation to gravity and accelerated or decelerated movement.

There are two types of vestibular receptors in the inner ear in a structure called the labyrinth. One type of receptor responds to the force of gravity. The other type of receptor is in the semicircular canals in the ear. These canals are responsible for our sense of movement, and the vestibular system is a unifying system. All other types of sensation are processed in reference to this basic vestibular information.

In every community, swings are the most popular play event on every playground, yet due to the basic set-up and configuration of swings, they are also the most limited. At PlayGrand Adventures, parents and children will have the ability to swing together on the same swing. Visitors of all ages will have safe chairs allowing them the freedom to swing and feel the sense of motion.

PlayGrand Adventures will incorporate swings that move in a linear motion as well as circular. Adaptive swings with harnesses to allow for safe movement, and a variety of swings of all shapes and sizes to host people of all ages and abilities. These types of swings may include belt swings, toddler swings, wheelchair adaptable swings and basket swings to provide full body experiences and physical support when a user lays on it.

What Is PlayGrand Adventures?

PlayGrand Adventures is an exciting opportunity to provide a safe, fun playground experience of ‘EPIC’ proportions for all ages and abilities. The playground will include separate adventure areas which are designed to stimulate, challenge and encourage   development of several skill sets while providing social interaction, sense of discovery, creativity and exercise.

Playground(RobinFrye)

The playground is part of a much larger overall park project which will include the EPIC, a state of the art recreation center, EPIC Waters indoor/outdoor water park, trail system and amphitheater at Grand Central Park.

Who is leading this playground project?

This project is being led by a committee of dedicated individuals from the community, local and national organizations, and the City of Grand Prairie Parks, Arts & Recreation Department. The Texas Recreation and Parks Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non profit organization is partnering with Grand Prairie Parks, Arts and Recreation to serve as the fundraising collection entity for the project.

Where will this all take place?

The location of the PlayGrand Adventures will be at Grand Central Park which is south of Arkansas Lane and west of State Hwy. 161 in Grand Prairie, Texas. This Regional Park has a total of 172 acres including 5 lakes, Central Bark Dog Park, Public Safety Administration Building The Summit, an award winning adult activity center.

What will be the outcomes?

SOCIAL / EMOTIONAL

PlayGrand Adventures will incorporate areas within the playground for people of all ages to socially interact. For play to be 100% inclusive, children, teens, and adults need to be included. To create lifelong memories, everyone must play together; learn to cooperate, take turns, and to engage in dramatic and imaginative play. To allow for children to engage, feel as they belong and to choose how and when to play, PlayGrand will provide places that feel emotionally secure.

SENSORY

PlayGrand Adventures will include elements that increase the sense of discovery by incorporating smell, textures and differing sounds and colors. Some elements might include fountains, plant materials, sand play areas, learning panels and texture walls throughout the playground. The sensory rich adventure will teach social skills, increase fine and gross motor skills, concentration and creativity.

PHYSICAL

At PlayGrand Adventures all children, teens and adults will have the opportunity to be physically active through play. It is important to create and provide play environments that everyone wants to come and enjoy. PlayGrand Adventures will provide challenges for children of all abilities, offer healthy risks and a variety of developmentally appropriate activities for all who play.

COGNITIVE

At PlayGrand Adventures, people of all ages will learn through play and interaction with each other in the environment that they are in. By keeping children engaged in meaningful play for longer periods of time will support intuitive play behaviors that stimulate development. PlayGrand Adventures will offer opportunities for everyone to problem solve, think abstractly, and develop cause and effect skills that help provide unique hands on experience.

COMMUNICATION

The PlayGrand Adventures playground will support the development of receptive and expressive language, allowing everyone to be themselves, express who they are and demonstrate what they know. PlayGrand Adventures will encourage language development which occurs through natural play behaviors and routines and is enhanced through developmentally appropriate play elements, non-structured events, and outdoor programming.

SAFETY

PlayGrand Adventures will create a fun experience for children of all ages on learning how to play it safe everywhere, at anytime, in a controlled miniature setting. The playground will offer the ability to learn the specifics of bicycle and pedestrian transportation safety through education in a real life playful environment.

How will this impact your community?

PlayGrand Adventures is a part of the EPIC project, located at the corner of Warrior Trail and Waterwood Drive, within Grand Central Park.  The EPIC project includes the EPIC, a mega sized recreational center, EPIC Waters Indoor Water Park, and PlayGrand Adventures.  The Grand Central Park currently has the Summit Active Adult Center for members 50 years and older, and the Grand Prairie Police and Fire Administration building.  The Summit has won numerous national and international awards, and we expect PlayGrand Adventures to follow suit, attaining national press and awards for the type of facility that is proposed.

PlayGrand Adventures will be an all-inclusive playground for people of all abilities and all ages, with amenities that will bring people back again & again. Central to the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, estimates are that visitors will come from as far away as 100 miles or more for daily visits, as well as some moving their special needs families to the area making Grand Prairie their permanent home just to be close to PlayGrand Adventures.

This project is central to approximately 7 million people. Not only will the citizens of Grand Prairie benefit from this playspace, but people all across the area will as well.

PlayGrand Adventures is not a special needs playground but instead a place where everyone can participate and be involved in play. PlayGrand Adventures incorporates spaces addressing Autism with their unique play needs, older children with cognitive abilities far below their physical age, as well as able bodied kids and those with mobility issues.  There will be areas for Wounded Warriors to have the place to rehabilitate, train as well as to play alongside their children.

The benefits are absolutely endless. There are too many different kids and adults with varying abilities to place restrictions or age definitions in a playscape. This 10 acre playground will be for everyone.
